Historical Society offers public programs year-round
for both children and adults. Check back often! Call

COMING EVENTS*:
Kids’ First
Saturday: See It, Hear It Storytime Saturday,
January 2, 1-2 p.m.
Hear and see Pegi Deitz Shea’s “Ten Mice for Tet” as
we illustrate it on our felt board. Other stories will follow,
and a snack and small craft are included. $5 per child, $3 per
museum member child
Poetry Read-In January 8, 7-9 p.m.
Past West Hartford Poet Laureate Maria Sassi will lead the evening
of poetry and prose. Sassi, Lonie Black, and Tom Nicotera
lead off, then open the mic to other readers.
Writers of all ages are encouraged to read their work or that
of another author or poet. Anyone reading must sign up
the night of the program. Refreshments will be available. A
$5 donation is recommended.
Poetry Workshop January 9, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Led by Maria Sassi, the focus of this workshop will be on revision
and new works. The workshop fee is $30 per person. The
fee includes the Saturday session and light refreshments. A break
for lunch and time to write will be included. Participants
are responsible for their own lunch. Registration is required
and space is limited. Call 860-521-5362 x 21 to register.
Anyone age 17 and over is invited to attend.

Menu: Bread & cheese, beef stew, pickled
beets, & pumpkin pudding
Tickets: $30 per person per night, $25 for museum

An Afternoon with Jane Yolen Saturday, February
6, 1 - 2:30 p.m.
Award-winning author Jane Yolen will read aloud one of her favorite
books, answer questions, and hold a book signing. Guests
may even get a sneak peek at one of her upcoming books.
Yolen
will read from her book, Tea With
an Old Dragon, which was published in 1998. It
tells the story of a young girl named Louisa
who is curious about Sophia Smith, a woman
who the other children call “the old
dragon.” The
book was illustrated by artist Monica Vachula.
Tea with Jane Yolen is $6 per person and
free for museum members. Guests
have the choice of hot chocolate or tea, as
well as cookies. Reservations are required– call
860-521-5362 x10.

11, 6 - 8 p.m.
Learn the basics of crochet- chain, single crochet, and more.
Valentine’s Hearth Cooking Sunday,
February 14, 2 - 4 p.m.
Make Valentine’s treats over the open

Winter Workshops for Whippersnappers February
16-19, 2 - 4 p.m.
The program fee is $15 per child per workshop ($12 for museum

Sew together a fabric sachet pillow filled with potpourri!
Wednesday, February
17 – Gingerbread & Cocoa
Make and decorate old fashioned gingerbread men and
women, then dunk them in home-made hot chocolate.
Thursday, February 18 – Mosaic Paper & Glass
Jar
Use
colorful
bits of scrap
paper to
make a beautiful
vase or jar.
Friday, February 19 – Calligraphy & Stationery
Make your own stationery, then learn how to write in
calligraphy.

How to Write a Book Saturday, March 27

Shea wrote
and illustrated “Noah
Webster Weaver of Words”, but they never
met until after the book was published! In
this exciting workshop, both Vachula and Shea
will talk about what it takes to publish a
book, as well as answer questions.
