Ever wonder what everyday life was like in the past? How did people preserve food? How did they keep clean without modern conveniences? Well, wonder no more! The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society presents Webster’s Wonder Boxes, a monthly activity box that helps kids explore questions about colonial life. Each Webster’s Wonder Box tackles a different question about the past and comes with everything your child needs to learn about the monthly theme and make a related craft and snack!
Webster’s Wonder Boxes are created for kids ages 7-12 and are carefully planned and age appropriate to inspire learning and fun. Each month will explore a different theme like farming or food preparation and will provide insight into colonial life and explain how the craft and culinary activities relate to one another and the monthly topic. Your box includes a learning page, instructions, and all materials needed to make a craft and snack. Kids can work without adult supervision as the cooking and craft activities require no cutting or heating.
Kids can explore their Webster’s Wonder Box on their own or tune in to a live virtual session with a museum teacher who will demonstrate how to complete the activities. Live virtual sessions will be held once per month on a Wednesday at 3 p.m. and are perfect for students looking to engage with their peers and ask questions – and for parents looking to keep their child engaged for an hour! The upcoming schedule includes April 7, 2021 (Hygiene and Getting Clean), and May 5, 2021 (Farming), and June 2, 2021 (Food Preservation). If your child is not available for the live virtual session, a recording will be available, so they can watch at a time convenient for them.
