DESCRIPTION:Textile Production In Early America \nPresented by Margaret Liljedahl \nNovember 7\, 2024 \nTextile production was an important component of the early American economy\, and continues to be a career and hobby for many individuals today. This talk will focus on the techniques and tools that weavers like Noah Webster’s father would have used to produce cloth for their communities. This includes a review of common natural fiber sources\, basic fabric structures\, and design considerations. Participants will have the chance to see examples of antique fiber processing equipment and learn about how they have been used for the past 300+ years. \nTickets are available now at www.noahwebster.yapsody.com! \nAbout the Presenter: Margaret Liljedahl is a West Hartford native who had her first encounter with an antique loom at the Noah Webster House. Over the past decade\, Margaret has studied historical weaving techniques and has the privilege of working with several historical sites and museums across Connecticut and New York to get their barn looms singing again. She is an active member of the Handweavers Guild of Connecticut and is passionate about connecting antique fiber equipment with locals who still know how to use them.

These readings will take place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on September 28\, October 19\, November 9\, & December 14.\n\n\nWordHouse Reading Series                                                                            \nSaturday November 9\, 2pm\nVictoria Norland \nMargaret Gibson and actress Heather Oakley \nwill be giving a dramatic presentation of Gibson’s new book\nDraw Me Without Boundaries\, a work of poetry and prose.\nReading begins with an Open Mic (Limited due to special program: First 8 poets\, one 1 poem per reader. ) \nMargaret Gibson\, the state Poet Laureate of Connecticut from 2019-through 2022\, has published 14 books of poems\, all with LSU Press\, just recently DRAW ME WITHOUT BOUNDARIES.  Prior to this experimental book of poetry and prose\, Gibson brought out a trilogy\, which includes Broken Cup\, Not Hearing the Wood Thrush\, and The Glass Globe\, which won the Connecticut Book Award in Poetry.   Her AWARDS include The Lamont Selection\, Melville Kane Award\, Connecticut Book Award (twice). She was a Finalist for the National Book Award\, 1993\, and for the Poets’ Prize\, 2016.  As Poet Laureate\, and with a grant from the Academy of American Poets\, she edited an anthology\, Waking Up to the Earth: Connecticut Poets in a Time of Global Climate Crisis. \nHeather Oakley is an actor\, director\, and educator who taught theater-related curricula in New York City for over twenty years. She trained at The Atlantic Theater Company’s Acting School and was invited to become a member of their faculty where she taught Meisner-based Moment Lab classes\, Scene Study\, and Film Acting to their New York University undergraduates and Conservatory students. Heather was also the Master Teaching Artist and the Educational Consultant for Atlantic’s Staging Success Program in New York City’s public schools. Heather is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (AB) and Columbia University (MA). \nVictoria Nordlund is the Poet Laureate of Glastonbury\, CT\, and lead master teaching artist of The Nook Farm Writers Collaborative at The Mark Twain House & Museum. Her poetry collections Wine-Dark Sea and Binge Watching Winter on Mute are published by Main Street Rag. She is a Best of the Net and Pushcart Prize Nominee\, whose work has appeared in PANK Magazine\, Rust+Moth\, Chestnut Review\, Maudlin House\, trampset\, and elsewhere. No registration is required. The museum suggests a $5 donation upon entry\, which helps support museum educational initiatives. \nThe West Hartford Gift Shop is the anchor vendor at the Holiday Market and will have many products available\, including the new cozy West Hartford and Connecticut sweaters and scarves\, the Julia Gash collection\, featuring the town’s most iconic features and the places that make our town unique. His professional experiences as a pianist include performing with numerous orchestras (1977 toured the U.S. with the Glenn Miller Orchestra)\, lounge groups\, jazz ensembles and vocalists in the New England states\, Atlanta\, Phoenix\, and Las Vegas. \nGail Lumpkin performs throughout New England with the six-piece band “Celebrity” and Pianist/arranger John Brighenti. She also performs with Walter Gwardyak and has performed with the late Donn Trenner. She was the featured vocalist with the Paul Landerman Orchestra\, performing for Three U. S. Presidents and a multitude of local political and charitable events and was invited to sing the National Anthem at Yankee Stadium. She has also performed with the Ed Bant Trio and the Hot Cat Jazz Band. She currently works as a consultant and music mentor at the Kinsella Magnet School of Performing Arts.

As publisher of her own press\, Grayson Books\, Connors has edited several poetry anthologies. She earned an MFA in poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts. DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Spelling Bee will return to West Hartford on Sunday\, March 9\, 2025\, and participants will compete for the chance to represent the state at the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee. \nThe 8th Annual Connecticut Spelling Bee is presented by the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society\, Connecticut’s Official Regional Partner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition begins at 1 p.m. on March 9 at the Hoffman Auditorium at the University of Saint Joseph\, located at 1678 Asylum Avenue in West Hartford. \nStudents who have made it to The Connecticut Spelling Bee have already won their school- or town-wide spelling bees. This year\, thousands of Connecticut students in grades 1-8 participated in the spelling bee program. From that\, 64 are eligible to move on to The Connecticut Spelling Bee. This makes 2025 the largest and most competitive Connecticut Spelling Bee in recent history\, a number that grows each year. \nThank you to People’s Bank\, the Lead Sponsor of the 2025 Connecticut Spelling Bee. \nCheer on Connecticut’s top spellers! These readings will take place from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on February 1\, March 8\, April 5\, May 3\, & June 28.\n\n\nWordHouse Reading Series\nSaturday April 5\, 2pm\nJulia M. Paul and Henk Rossouw \nReading starts with an Open Mic \nJulia M. Paul is author of two full-length collections\, Shook (Grayson Books) and Table with Burning Candle (Cornerstone Press) and a chapbook\, Staring Down the Tracks (The Poetry Box). Her poems are widely published in journals and anthologies. Paul leads the Riverwood Poetry Series\, a long-running poetry reading series in Hartford\, CT. Her poem\, Dear Coroner\, How Could You Know\, appears in the 2023 Pushcart Prize XLVII Best of the Small Presses anthology. About her latest book\, the poet Ilya Kaminsky\, says: “Deeply moving\, this requiem\, this elegy chronically the stages of grief through multiple lyric modes. These pages are as musical as they are heartbreaking.” \nHenk Rossouw’s debut Xamissa (Fordham University Press\, 2018) won the Poetic Justice Institute Editor’s Prize. The African Poetry Book Fund included his chapbook The Water Archives in the 2018 box set New-Generation African Poets: Tano. His poems have been in POETRY\, Boston Review\, World Literature Today\, Iowa Review\, Adroit Journal\, and The Paris Review\, among other places. He earned his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Houston and his MFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. An associate professor\, Henk teaches creative writing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and serves as a consulting editor for the African Poetry Book Series. Flora: An Intimate Celebration will launch at the Noah Webster House on May 1\, 2025. The exhibit showcases unique photographs that focus on the finer details found in nature. \nJoin us for an Opening Reception of this exhibit at the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society on Thursday\, May 1 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. This exhibit will remain at the museum and can be seen by visitors through Monday\, June 30th. \nJose Gaztambide is a West Hartford artist who developed an interest in photography in the late 1960s. After studying in New York at The New School\, Gaztambide returned to Puerto Rico in 1980 to teach Photography and Theory of Communication at the University of Puerto Rico (Rio Piedras campus)\, where he taught until 1997. In 1988\, he returned to school to get his PhD in Communication. \nGaztambide’s creative passion was reignited upon his discovery of digital cell phone photography\, which allowed him to be more creative and spontaneous with his photographs. Now\, Gaztambide takes inspiration from the natural world. He explains\, “Nature has its own rhythms and rules and demands respect and care. The more I learned\, the hungrier I was for more of her beauty.” When Gaztambide concentrated this focus\, his photographs began to represent his mission to further celebrate and understand nature. \nFlora: An Intimate Celebration invites viewers to pay attention to nature’s finer details.  Gaztambide’s photographs celebrate nature’s emerging forms\, colors\, and textures that are often overlooked.  Enjoy his humble celebration! \n
