Witness Stones Online Class

The Witness Stones Project honors and commemorates the lives of those enslaved here. Register to participate in this annual class focused on uncovering and exploring the lives of those enslaved in the West Division of Hartford. In the 2022 class, participants will learn to tell the story of Titus and Julia Thomas.

Their Witness Stones will be installed on Juneteenth 2022, adding to the 36 Witness Stones in the Old Center Cemetery.

Attend the online course and . . .
● Learn about the history of slavery and freedom in West Hartford by using the database of
more than 80 people enslaved here.
● Interpret historical documents about the Thomases who were enslaved and then freed.
● Explore the 1700’s Cadwell Account Book to learn about life in colonial West Hartford.
● Discuss issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in the 18th century and today.

This course is presented by: Dr. Tracey Wilson, Town Historian and Liz Devine, the Witness Stones Project Directors

Zoom course will run on an hour on four consecutive Thursday beginning March 17th. Each hour class begins at 7 p.m. and fall on March 17, 24, 31 and April 7.
