High School/Grades 11-12
In recognition of the America250 commemoration in 2026, The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society is pleased to present two new outreach programs for high school & college-preparatory students of United States History, featuring primary source readings and analysis that delve into the influential life and work of Connecticut’s own Noah Webster.
Webster is chiefly remembered as the author of The American Spelling Book (1783) and The American Dictionary of the English Language (1828), but his contributions to the founding of our nation are more than significant; Webster’s acquaintances included the most important figures of the American Revolutionary period; George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
Noah Webster was a gifted writer who leveraged the power of his pen to define, for all social classes, the essential qualities of what it means to be an American, and how the words “We the People” could best ensure not only the survival, but the cultural vitality of our nation.
