‘D’ is for ‘Dictionary’ Day

October 6, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

- Free

The faeries and the bees are teaming up for a day of spelling! Join the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society in Old Lyme’s Florence Griswold Museum to enjoy this year’s letter-themed Wee Faerie Village. The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society’s Public Programs Manager, Sophie Huget, will host pop-up spelling bees on Saturday, October 6, 2018, from
11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for this word nerdy celebration. Learn about founding father and lexicographer Noah Webster while testing your skills in a friendly spelling competition! Prizes will be awarded for participation.

The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society proudly co-sponsored The Connecticut Spelling Bee in 2017 and 2018 with the Hartford Courant. Each year, 9,000 Connecticut students participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Noah Webster, America’s original top speller, was born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. The museum preserves, interprets, and champions the legacy of Noah Webster. How better to achieve that goal than to host spelling bees whenever possible?

The pop-up spelling bees on Saturday, October 6, at the Florence Griswold Museum will be open to spellers of all ages! No studying necessary, but Noah Webster would be proud if you cracked open a Webster’s Dictionary beforehand.

Haven’t visited the Florence Griswold Museum’s Wee Faerie Village before? Get ready to explore Lettersburg Junction, the enchanting region where faeries live in alphabetically placed houses resembling all the letters of the alphabet, from A to Z. There’s also the quaint hamlet of Numbertown and Punctuation Stations where the homes are somewhat questionable [?], excited [!], inclusive [&], and trendy [#]. The houses might be informed by the letter, an A-frame in the Alps, a Beachside Bungalow, or a Casa on the Corner or embellished with the letter [s-shaped shingles or pathways of pea-gravel]. Homesteads also feature things that begin with the letter. For example, the Shoddy Shack might have snake-shaped smoke streaming from the single smoke stack. Literally a litany of alliteration!

Lettersburg Junction will feature over three-dozen faerie-scaled places on the Florence Griswold Museum’s campus that celebrate the alphabet in a wee faerie fun and imaginative way: 26 Letters, 5 Punctuations, and 1 to infinity Numbers. Visitors tour Lettersburg Junction with their “Directionary,” and can create their very faerie house based on their initials in Letter Land.

Wee Faerie Village is on view September 29 through October 28. Visit www.florencegriswoldmuseum.org for more information.
